Getting Close to Discharge!
I spoke to the nurse practitioner this morning. Drew is taking almost all of his feedings by bottle now. They are tubing just one feeding a day so he can rest. We are trying to figure out which bottle nipple works best for him. He doesn't spill milk with the slow flow, but he has to work harder with that one....so hard that he doesn't finish the feeding. The fast flow is so fast that he gets choked up and looses more milk. We started his last feeding with the slow and finished with the fast. He seemed to be getting the hang of the fast flow. I'm gonna look at the bottle nipples we have at the house. I'm pretty sure I have some medium flow medella ones. Medella also makes a new nipple that is comparable to breast feeding. It's called the Calma. That wasn't around 4 years ago. The nurses said they would try it if I would like to. I may pick one up in the gift shop for Drew's next feeding.
The nurse practitioner asked me to bring the car seat tomorrow. Drew has to pass a 1 hour car seat test. He basically has to sit in the car seat and his stats can't drop. She also said Drew would be circumcised tomorrow morning. Poor buddy! She said they would remove his feeding tube either later tonight or 1st thing tomorrow. Drew has to maintain his weight once the tube is removed and he is exclusively bottle fed/nursed.
We are definitely in the home stretch. The practitioner said the latest he would go home would be Monday.
Four years ago on this date, Sam was discharged from the NICU after a six week stay. It is looking like Drew's stay will be just under 2 weeks. Today he is wearing the outfit that we brought Sam home in. I am trying to get a little wear out of Sam's preemie clothes. Drew is quickly growing out of them. Today he had a 2 ounce gain from yesterday...he weighs 5lbs 6.2oz. He is almost back to his birth weight. His lowest weight in the NICU was 5lbs 2.7oz...a few days after his iv was discontinued.
